Speaker Biographies

 

Susan Albershardt. Florida State Film Commissioner, Governor's Office of Film & Entertainment. Appointed to state post in 2003, after managing television development office of production group at Universal Studios Orlando. At Comrade Entertainment as VP of marketing and production, she was associated with the Yakov Smirnoff Variety Show and marketing Wayne Newton, Tony Orlando, Yakov Smirnoff, and the stage show Always, Patsy. Ms. Albershardt began her career in film and television as an actress at the age of 19.

Michael Baron. President & CEO, Real Digital Media, LLC. RDM provides products and digital media services for entertainment, promotion, and advertising in public spaces. The company designs, manufactures, and markets multimedia players for retail and hospitality networks. Prior to RDM, Mr. Baron founded Teranex, a developer and manager of high performance video platforms and software applications. He spent 15 years with Sony Electronics. He has a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University.

James M. Burger. Attorney, Media, Information and Technologies, Dow Lohnes & Albertson. With the firm since 1997, representing technology companies on intellectual property, communications, and government policy matters. He spent nine years with Apple Computer as senior director in the law department, responsible for worldwide intellectual property. He works, speaks, and writes extensively on legal and policy issues relating to the convergence of technology, entertainment, intellectual property and regulation.

Buddy Dyer. Mayor of Orlando. Elected mayor in 2003 special election and running for mayor in March, 2004. An environmental engineer and lawyer who graduated from Brown University and the University of Florida Law School, he was editor in chief of the law review and later received the highest score in the Florida Bar Exam in 1987. He was elected to the Florida senate in 1992 and re-elected twice, serving three years as senate Democratic leader. He left the senate in 2003 to run for mayor of Orlando.

Steven Chiang. Vice President, Studio General Manager, Electronic Arts (Tiburon). Responsible for managing Electronic Arts' Orlando operation. EA is the studio responsible for popular sports franchises like Madden NFL Football, NCAA Football, NASCAR Thunder, and NFL Street. More than 300 programmers, artists, designers, and testers work in the Orlando office.

Philip J. Corman. Director, Microsoft TV Platforms. Since 2001 responsible for marketing, product, and development relationships with strategic partners such as OEMs, hardware and software vendors, and systems integrators for video on demand, electronic programming guide, conditional access and subscriber billing management. Earlier he was general manager, interactive digital systems for Mitsubishi Electronics America and started a commercial video on demand service that delivered programs and Internet browsing over TV to hotels and hospitals.

Richard T. Crotty. Orange County Chairman. Chief executive since 2001 in county serving 896,000 citizens with 6,000 employees and an annual budget exceeding $2 billion. A Republican, he served as a Florida state representative for 12 years, state senator for 2 years, and Orange County property appraiser for nine years. As a legislator he was the sponsor of the Florida Prepaid College Tuition Program which gives families a cost-effective way to pay for college. He graduated in the charter class of what is now the University of Central Florida.

Scott Fishman. VP & Exec. Producer, Spike TV; General Manager, Nickelodeon Studios. With Spike TV, "The First Entertainment Network for Men" during its transition from TNN and produced the 1st Annual Video Game Awards in December, 2003. He is executive producer of Spike TV's Stock Car Nation, due to go on the air in May, 2004. Mr. Fishman also oversees the daily operations of Nickelodeon Studios Florida in Orlando. He joined Nickelodeon in 1990 and supervised such programs as Nick Arcade and What Would You Do after starting out at MTV.

Judson (Jud) C. French, Jr. President & CEO, Strategic Services International, Inc. (SSII), a convergent media business and technology strategy consultancy in Winter Park, Florida with clients in digital media, Internet and communications. As corporate director, digital television for Harris Corporation, he led their DTV product line rollout and created & produced an award-winning nationwide educational initiative and 49 city tour; the Harris/PBS DTV Express. He is also founder and executive director of Digital Media Alliance Florida, the State's digital media industry association, and Executive Director and Conference Chairman of The Money & Media Show™.

Adam Gelles. Director, Industry Initiatives, Interactive Advertising Bureau. As head of the leading trade association for interactive media in the U.S., he oversees the development of industry products, standards and research for the interactive media industry. He has developed cross-marketing programs for consumer brands including Coca-Cola, JP Morgan Chase, General Motors, MasterCard, Tommy Hilfiger and US Airways. His articles on marketing and media have been published in Forrester Research and the Wall Street Journal.

Michael Gerrity. Founder and Chairman of MultiChannel Ventures, LLC. MCV is a developer, owner and operator of a broad range of video programming, broadband distribution, interactive services, e-commerce and communications businesses headquartered at Universal Studios Florida. Media assets include Real Estate Channel, Home Improvement Channel, Election Channel, ForTheTenant.com, The Tourist Channel and MyTalent.com. He is also the Founder of The Money & Media Show™ and he has been a featured speaker in a number of technology, media and investor industry conferences.

Bill Gilliam. VP and General Manager, Broadband Internet Services, Bright House Networks. He has extensive experience leading emerging technology efforts and proven ability to implement groundbreaking products and services on new technology platforms. He headed the software engineering portion of Time Warner's Full Service Network project in the mid-1990s that provided video on demand and interactive TV including shopping and games to subscribers. With Florida Power & Light, he conducted technology research and business development.

Michael A. Gross. VP Regulatory Affairs and Regulatory Counsel, Florida Cable Telecommunications Association. FCTA represents the franchised cable companies of Florida who serve more than five million cable customers. He represents the Florida cable industry in all regulatory matters at the Florida Public Service Commission, in legislative matters affecting regulation of the telecommunications industry at the FCC, and in state and federal court. He spent 23 years as a civil trial attorney in private practice and representing state agencies.

Jeff Jensen. VP Technology, Transit Television Network (TTN). TTN is a mass transit passenger information system that provides digital media content and wireless communication to riders and additional revenue to transit authorities. The company was formed as a venture of ITEC Entertainment in Orlando and Torstar of Toronto, owner of the Toronto Star, Canada's largest newspaper. Mr. Jensen spent 15 years with ITEC and played a leading role in control systems design and implementation for attractions such as T2/3D, Twister, Spiderman, and Men in Black.

Karen Lennon. CEO and Founder of Beyond Z Interactive Media; Co-Chairman, Interactive Media Alliance. Formed in 2000, Beyond Z is a leader in interactive television and cross-platform interactive production services and recently received the first Primetime Emmy awarded for technical excellence in interactive television for the TV production of Band of Brothers with HBO. Beyond Z also cooperates with The Scripps Networks, Worldspan, The Weather Channel, PBS, Metabyte and Starcom, among others.

Byron F. Marchant. Exec. VP, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer, Black Entertainment Television, Inc. Reporting directly to President & COO Debra L. Lee, he oversees legal affairs, human resources, computer information systems, satellite operations, telecommunications, facilities, real estate and corporate purchasing for BET and its subsidiaries. Earlier, Mr. Marchant was a Partner with Patton Boggs, LLP. He is a member of the New Jersey Bar, the U.S. Supreme Court Bar, and the Federal Communications Bar Association.

J. Patrick Michaels. Chairman & CEO, CEA. Founded in 1973 to provide service to a select group of cable industry clients who needed financial expertise, today CEA is a full-service international brokerage and financial services firm, which includes the management of global private equity funds. He is also Founder and Chairman of the Atlantic American Corporate Group and Founder and Co-Chairman of Atlantic American Asset Managers, LLC. Earlier Mr. Michaels was VP of TM Communications, cable subsidiary of the Times Mirror Company.

Andy Murphy, VP Network Operations, The Golf Channel. Responsible for operation of broadcast and studio facilities and long-range planning and the implementation of new technologies. Earlier he spent two years with USA Broadcasting as VP Broadcast Operations and Engineering responsible for 12 major market stations and the low power network. He spent nine years at Fox Broadcasting from 1989 and launched Fox Net, the company's first cable service. He also launched Fox Latin America and the movie service CineCanal.

Ted Murphy. President/CEO & Founder, MindComet. Visionary behind the cutting edge technology and creativity that has led to MindComet's meteoric rise over the past five years. Clients of the company's new kind of business marketing include Nextel, EarthLink, Heineken, Coors, Discount Auto Parts and Copenhagen. With his extensive background in many areas of content development, he has been recognized for the past two years by A/V Multimedia Producer Magazine as one of the top 100 producers in the country.

James D. (Jimmy) Nguyen. Partner, Foley and Lardner, Los Angeles. Member of firm's Litigation Department and its IP Litigation, General Commercial Litigation, Consumer Products & Trademarks, and E-Business & Information Technology Practice Groups. With an entertainment boutique firm in Beverly Hills, his practice included entertainment, intellectual property, and business litigation as well as entertainment, Internet, and e-commerce transactions. His clients run the gamut of today's media from stations to online content providers to software companies.

Phil Peters. Chairman, Department of Film, UCF School of Film and Digital Media. Came to UCF in 2002 from Seattle as member of Dynamic Media Initiative. A film production designer and computer games producer/designer, he has TV and film credits including the Emmy-winning series Northern Exposure. Films include Waiting for the Light, Crazy in Love, and Windrider. Among interactive projects he produced and designed are The X-Files Interactive (Fox), MovieBeam (Disney), GameSilo (iBlast), and Searchopolis (Secure Computing).

Michael Silbergleid. Editor of DigitalTV - Television Broadcast magazine and Sports TV Production magazine, and head of SilverKnight Group, he has almost 20 years of expertise in television production and technology. Recognized as an expert on digital television, he was also the editor of the first edition of "The Guide to Digital Television" published by Miller Freeman PSN (now United Entertainment Media) in 1998, and co-editor of the 2nd and 3rd editions. Experienced as producer, director, copywriter, video editor, chief engineer and facility designer.

Christopher Stapleton. Director, Media Convergence Laboratory. UCF's Media Convergence Laboratory is a joint venture among the Institute for Simulation and Training, CREAT Digital Media Program and Computer Science Department, and the UCF School of Film and Digital Media. He is engaged in developing creative and scientific research for next generation experience-based digital media for art, entertainment and education. Mr. Stapleton has more than 20 years' experience with companies such as Universal Studios, Nickelodeon and Disney.

Richard D. Titus. Managing Partner, Schematic. The market leader in interface design for television, the design firm Schematic is based in Hollywood. Clients include Cablevision, Comcast, Microsoft, Turner and Sony. Its interfaces are deployed on devices and platforms such as the PS2 and Xbox, PC's, most set-top box platforms, wireless devices and the Internet. With his wife Tavin, Mr. Titus produced the film On_line, a romantic comedy/drama about six characters whose lives are changed by the Internet, released theatrically in 2003.

Robert S. Wight. President & CEO, Channel Intelligence, Inc. Recognized as one of the 20 most influential people in the storage software business, he has held senior positions with Microsoft, Wang Labs, Avail Systems, Seagate Software, Conner Software Products, Archive Software and Maynard Electronics. At Microsoft he managed product design and development for system management software products for Windows and Windows NT. Mr. Wight started up Avail Systems and eventually sold it to Wang Software for $32 million.
